The second gate, further down the island, leads to a more residential and quiet section with larger homes.
There is one road in and one road out. You drive through Johns Island, take Betsy Kerrison Parkway, pass through a roundabout at Freshfields Village, then continue onto Kiawah Island Parkway and up to the gate. If you are renting one of our homes, we send you the access details before you arrive so you can roll right through.
Local tip: Add 10 to 15 minutes to your arrival estimate if you land on a Saturday in June or July. Check in traffic is real, and you will be much happier waiting in line with snacks and water in the car.
The island has about 10 miles of natural Atlantic beach. If you are not staying inside the gates, the only public beach access is Kiawah Beachwalker Park at the western tip of the island, just before the first gate. Our guests can reach the beach from multiple resort access paths, and we always share the nearest one for the home they are renting.
The Beaches and Outdoor Spots You Should Know First
These are the places we send first time guests to before anywhere else. They give you the truest sense of Kiawah, and a few hours at any of them sets the tone for the whole trip.
Kiawah Beachwalker Park
Beachwalker is the only public beach access on Kiawah, and even longtime locals love it. The sand is soft, the water is warm in summer, and the swimming area is patrolled by lifeguards in season. Showers, restrooms, and a snack stand make it easy for a long day with kids or visitors.
We send guests here when they want a low effort, high reward beach morning. Parking is limited to roughly 150 spots, so arrive before 10 a.m. on busy weekends or be ready to circle for a while.

Night Heron Park
Night Heron is the heart of family life on the island. It is a good rainy day backup too, since the nature center is right next door.
